The clouds hung low in the sky and lightning licked at the horizon as Courtney and Skipperdale waited outside the dressage arena at the 2012 Summer Dressage Show. Though the thunderclouds were menacing, nobody was going to let a little rain get in the way of their performance. Courtney silently reviewed the routine one last time in her head, while Skipper tossed his head in excitement. She had ridden Nellie, Mystic Seaside Stable's top dressage mare, in this class just an hour earlier. She was an experienced dressage horse with some impressive achievements who would be heading to the Olympics later that summer. This would be Skipperdale's first time performing at such a high level, and Courtney had her doubts about how he would hold up against seasoned dressage stars like Nellie. Nevertheless, she had agreed to try and ride him to victory in one of the largest dressage shows in the world.
Charlotte, MSS's owner, stood beside Courtney, holding her stallion's reins. As always, her blond hair had long since escaped from its ponytail and her shirt was streaked lightly with mud, but she didn't seem to mind. Charlotte turned to offer a few words of advice.
"Don't worry too much about being perfect. You can worry about that at the Olympics. Just guide him through, and he'll do fine."
Courtney nodded, nervously twisting her fingers in Skipper's braided mane. The horse and rider before them had just finished their round, and the score was being announced.
"And next up, we have number six-six-seven, Courtney Anderson riding MS Skipperdale," called the announcer. Courtney nudged Skipper into a trot as they entered the arena. She halted in the middle, saluted crisply, and waited for the music to begin. As the first few notes of Canon in D rang out through the misty air, Skipper picked up a collected trot, almost without even being asked to. He snorted at his apparent brilliance.
"Let's show them who we are, Skip," she murmured as they rounded the first turn. "Let's blow their minds."
